Calligramme

This piece is inspired by a letter to myself 20 years in the future. In this letter, I mention different horror franchises, namely Saw, repeatedly. These franchises have inspired me to be true to myself. Due to this, I made a Calligramme inspired by the franchise. The jigsaw piece in the middle is inspired by the imagery of the jigsaw piece that John Kramer, Jigsaw, takes out of each of his unique victims. The red blood surrounding this jigsaw piece is also unique to each person, due to it being their own blood.

Not only can this jigsaw piece be a reference to the Saw franchise, but it is also a way to represent my uniqueness. Each piece of a jigsaw puzzle is unique and has its own place in the puzzle. This is just like how, even though I am very unique, I still have my place in the world. I am myself and nobody can replace me.

The Creation of my Calligramme

I used the pen tool and the selection tools to create the shapes for this piece. I also used the text tool to turn these shapes into the Calligramme.

My original letter and sketch are as follows:

Dear Future Self,

As of today, you are 19, soon to be 20 years old, and studying at the University of Tampa. You are a communications major and not a big partier. You’re kind of the odd one out of the group, with you standing out for various reasons. Currently, you love horror movies and anything relating to horror. Your current special interest is the Saw franchise. You also love the Scream movies. You have made a numerous amount of plushies by crocheting, including many horror characters. You enjoy various types of art, including crochet, drawing, and filming things. You dress very alternatively, delving into gothic fashion as well as just normal alternative fashion. I am currently debating starting a social media around the fashion and makeup we do and hoping to find people who enjoy the way we look as compared to hating on it or judging it. I hope you are able to find a job that allows you to continue to be creative as well as continue expressing yourself in the way you enjoy. I hope you don’t give in when people belittle you because of the way you dress, and I hope you find yourself a partner who loves you for who you are and is happy for you. I know that currently, you plan on staying in Florida for a while. I hope you find a nice place that doesn’t cost too much and that you are able to have a steady income with some disposable income to spend on the things that make you happy. I hope you are able to find happiness in your life and not continue down a spiral of sadness. I hope you are able to thrive in life 20 years from now. I hope our favorite franchises remain some of our favorite franchises and that there are more additions to these franchises and that they are good quality. I hope life is great for you in 20 years.

Sincerely,
    19 Year Old Kaitlyn

Adobe Illustrator Tutorials

Adobe Illustrator in 10 Minutes

The shape creation tool and the black cursor are very straightforward. The direct selection tool seems a bit more difficult to use than most of the other tools, just because the anchors and handles may be confusing to mess with. The pen tool is also a bit finnicky to mess with at the beginning, but I'm sure that tool will get great use within the creations. The pathfinder panel is also a bit confusing to grasp. Most of these tools and panels will be used to create fluid and aesthetically pleasing designs. Everything within the layout of AI is movable and customizable. There are some preset layouts as well. To create a shape, you can either click and drag or you can click once and edit the dimensions you want for your shape.

Adobe Illustrator Tips

There is an easy way to slice up shapes to create something like an orange. Pressing Control + Y brings you into outline mode and allows you to see where lines are intersecting a shape. After selecting everything, in the pathfinder panel, there is an option to divide the shape. Applying gradient to text can open the door to make a more aesthetic and prettier logo using text. For some reason applying gradients to text isn't as easy as it may seem. In order to do this, you must start by removing the fill and opening "appearance" in the window tab. After this, you must add a new fill and select the gradient. Rotating the artboard is also a tool that is hidden away. This tool is very useful for changing your view. You have to click and hold on the hand tool to find this useful tool.

Vectors

The selection tool is going to be one of the most used tools in all of AI due to it being used to move things around, scale things, and rotate things. There are separate tools for this as well, but these things are possible with the selection tool. It is also possible to copy and paste shapes. This is done the same way that copy and paste is done in every other software. The direct selection tool allows for a user to create new shapes from these preexisting shapes.

I/W/W/B

Internet and World Wide Web

Internet is the way to access the World Wide Web as well as other things through various electronic devices. The Internet was created by Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf. The Internet was used in the 1960s by the government, but the Internet's official creation date was on January 1st, 1983, because computers, that were bulky at the time, did not have an efficient way to communicate with each other. Originally, in the 1960s, the Internet was used by the government to share information. Today, the Internet is used to do almost anything and everything. From checking emails to playing online games, the Internet is used broadly to do almost anything.

The World Wide Web is the webpages that a person can access through using the Internet. Tim Berners-Lee is credited with the creation of the World Wide Web. It was created in 1989 in order for scientists to be able to share information with universities better. It was used originally to make information sharing easier. It is still used for this purpose today, making sharing information between people around the world significantly easier.

The Internet and the World Wide Web are different. The Internet is the way to access the World Wide Web. The World Wide Web is the collection of things that can be found on the Internet. The Internet is not limited to just accessing the World Wide Web, however. The Internet can be used for things besides just browsing and interacting with the World Wide Web. Although they are different, the World Wide Web would not work without access to the Internet. The Internet is its own separate entity and can work without the World Wide Web.

The first website was created on August 6, 1991. This website was essentially instructions on how to use the World Wide Web. The website was created by Tim Berners-Lee, who created the World Wide Web. Although it seems like the first website was taken down, there was a project to restore this website under the URL http://info.cern.ch. This is an archive about the creation of the World Wide Web as well as a hyperlink to view the first website.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Lamarr

Lamarr and Antheil were able to come up with a way to use radio waves to transmit frequencies. Initially this was made with the intention of guiding torpedoes. This discovery led to the development of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Hedy Lamarr was an actress due to her beauty and her mind power was ignored until later in her life and after her death. The song "This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr" was written by Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp about her. The song is a comparison of Hedy Lamarr's life in comparison to Johnny Depp's life after his divorce with Amber Heard.

Jaap Haartsen developed Bluetooth in 1994. Jim Kardach suggested the name "Bluetooth" as a temporary name for the technology. It was a reference to Harald Bluetooth who united Denmark into a single kingdom similar to how Bluetooth would unite devices. The name stuck due to the Internet already loving the name choice. Similarly, the Bluetooth logo consists of the runes for the letters H and B as yet another reference to Harald Bluetooth.

Vic Hayes is credited with the creation of Wi-Fi in 1997. The original name for Wi-Fi was "IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence," but this was changed when the service was released publicly. The name Wi-Fi was created simply to sound cool. The name Wi-Fi was coined in 1999 by a brand called Interbrand. The name is commonly confused to mean "Wireless Fidelity," which was confused with the similarly named "Hi-Fi." The confusion was only furthered with the tagline for Wi-Fi being “The Standard for Wireless Fidelity.”

Intro

Introduction to Me

I'm Kaitlyn Fennell, a sophomore Communication, Media, and Culture major. I'm from New Jersey. I enjoy horror movies, with my favorite franchises being "Scream" for the classic horror movie genre and "Saw" for my overall favorite movies. I enjoy nearly everything horror, including video games such as "Resident Evil" or "Dead by Daylight." My favorite game at the moment is "Dead by Daylight," with me having accumulated over 300 hours as of now, with only purchasing the game in November. Outside of watching movies and playing games, I also enjoy crocheting. I mainly crochet plushies of horror icons, but I also make cute animals as well. I enjoy listening to music, with my favorite genres being alternative and rock.

Class Expectations

With this class, I expect to learn more about the digital world. Whether it be creating my own works or learning about preexisting works, I expect to learn many new things. I am most excited to be able to create my own new work within this class. I expect to have to put in a lot of work for this class, especially after seeing how much is expected of us after the first day. The main challenge I can see with this class is balancing my schoolwork with my daily life. Overall, I am excited to see where this class takes me. I am also excited to be able to learn more about digital presence and marketing myself within my creations.
